GEOFF LAWTON'S 2024 ONLINE PERMACULTURE DESIGN COURSE
This is the first online PDC that Geoff has taught in nearly two years, and the only cohort-based course he'll teach in 2024.
Â
Last-call enrollment closes in less than one week.
The most comprehensive Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course ever taught.
By anyone, anywhere.
Online or in-person.
There is simply nothing like it in scope, detail, or rigor.Â
Very inspiring...excited to be taking this step
The ideal way to spend one's time is perfecting the expression of life itself. To evolve by assisting life forms to fully express themselves. Beautiful and very inspiring. I am so excited to be taking this step. For years I've been absorbing everything I found on Permaculture and finally wanted to get officially certified.
Allen
I don't have adequate words to express my deepest gratitude...
...to the entire team who put this course together so beautifully, and who continued to monitor and answer questions throughout, and even went above and beyond to adapt and evolve the course towards what you saw was best and needed — now THAT’S permaculture thinking!
Sarah
My best academic experience...it changed my life
I do not know how to thank you. Not only has this been my best academic experience, it also changed my life. This class has been the seed in me that will flourish across my land, my life, my time, my progeny. Before this class I had little hope for humanity. Today I am filled with not just hope, but confidence for the future. This, I owe to you.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE COURSE?
A Generous 8 Month Pace
A new batch of lesson units will be released each week over 18 weeks, followed by almost 4 months devoted to working on the capstone project: The Final Design Exercise.
750+ Instructional Lessons
Blackboard-style instructional presentations, rich animations, detailed PDFs, Knowledge Checks, Learning Objectives, Activities, Brief Overviews, and Key Takeaways: A set of these will be released weekly, as per the curriculum schedule. Study them, ask questions 24/7, then prepare for the weekly video question & answer session.
Weekly Q&A with Geoff
After watching the core video lessons (blackboard and supplemental animations), you’ll have a chance to ask Geoff follow-up questions; all sessions will be recorded and made available to you in your student portal. For your benefit, we've included recordings from the previous course, featuring several hundred Q&A.
Daily Help from
PDC-certified TAs
You’re never alone: A team of fantastic teaching assistants (TAs) facilitate lively discussion, offer insights, and provide timely, helpful answers to your questions. Each of our TAs have been rigorously vetted and are passionate about permaculture.Â
Official Permaculture Design Certificate
Upon completing the course and the final project, you’ll receive the official PDC certificate -- the same certificate that Bill bestowed on Geoff more than 40 years ago, and that Geoff has presented to over 20,000 qualified students in the decades since.
A First for Permaculture: Digital Accreditation
We are honored to be the first permaculture institute anywhere in the world to issue digital certificates that are cryptographically secured by blockchain. 1-click social media sharing (LinkedIn, Facebook + dozens more) is built in, as is "anytime printing" in ultra-high resolution.
Cloud-Based Portfolio
We often hear the phrase, “show, don’t tell,” and our digital, cloud-based portfolio feature helps you do just that. On your PDC certificate website is an area to showcase your course projects: photos of your garden or farm, your course design sketches, or related videos that you’ve shot. This is another “first” in online permaculture instruction, one that we are encouraging other instructors to adopt.
24/7 Community Town Hall
A sleek, modern discussion area powered by industry-leader Discourse far exceeds outdated commenting tools; a clean and easy-to-use platform fosters meaningful interactions with course teaching assistants, Geoff, and your peers — professionals, aid workers, NGO staff, and the other fantastic folks. Many students have said that they learned as much from the comments and discussions as they did from the core instructional materials.
Private Facebook Group
A private, student-only Facebook group gives you and your colleagues an additional forum for vibrant an additional forum for vibrant interactions. This group is optional, but many of our past students have found that, while the Discourse area focuses on questions and comments around course material, the private Facebook group widens the net to a less formal, “water-cooler” style setting. The diversity and talent of our student body will fuel friendships and working relationships that last well beyond the course.
Student-Centered Instructional Design
We believe that learning involves not just a presentation of information, but a transfer of knowledge, perspective, and skills. To facilitate this, we go quantum leaps beyond just having you watch videos. Our instructional design team have added Knowledge Checks, Learning Objectives, Activities, Brief Overviews, and Key Takeaways throughout the course.
Interactive Permaculture Activities
Our instructional design team has created over 40 interactive and action-oriented mini-activities that will help you put the concepts and information you’re learning to use right away. By the time you get to the Final Design Exercise (FDE), you’ll have built — bit by bit, piece by piece — the knowledge and skill-set to tackle the FDE with total confidence.
“FDE Flow”
The Final Design Exercise (FDE) required in most PDC classes unites all the knowledge and insights learned during the course. But it is rigorous, intensive, and demanding. To help with this, we re-imagined the process from the ground-up to help innovate the “FDE Flow” — an approach and platform that nudges you toward a completed project, step-by-step. And for inspiration, we’ve added exemplar samples from previous PDC graduates.
Attentive Student Support
Chat and email support from our dedicated Student Care team is just a click away, and an always-accessible Knowledge Base provides instant answers for commonly-asked admin and technical questions.
Catch-Up Sessions
During the course, two weeks will be set aside for catching-up and reviewing course material. These breaks will be spaced out. During these weeks, Geoff will continue doing video Q&As, and TAs will be on hand to answer questions.
Extended Access
After the 18 weeks of content release are complete, you will have continued access through January 31st, 2025 to all the videos, recorded Q&As, animations, and PDFs. Watch, listen, and read as many times as you’d like.
HEAR WHAT OURÂ GRADUATESÂ HAVE TO SAY...
"In the early 1970s, it dawned on me that no one had ever applied design to agriculture. When I realized it, the hairs went up on the back of my neck. It was so strange. We’d had agriculture for 7,000 years, and we’d been losing for 7,000 years — everything was turning into desert. So I wondered, can we build systems that obey ecological principles?"
— Bill Mollison, Founder of Permaculture
Permaculture is that system, and the PDC course is the quickest way to master it, step-by-step. It is the absolute foundation for all that comes after it.
CRACKING THE CODE:
THE PERMACULTURE DESIGNERS' MANUAL
Bill Mollison's "Permaculture Designers' Manual" (PDM) is *the* authoritative guide on permaculture design. Its flexible and comprehensive framework is so valuable that — to this day — Geoff himself refers to it in his practice. There is truly no other book like it, making it a must-have for any committed permaculturist. However, due to its intricate details, those who attempt to read it without prior completion of a Permaculture Design Course (PDC) often find it challenging.
Our PDC, which took two years to develop — and another eight to refine — was meticulously designed to complement the PDM. This course includes 57 hours of instructional content and an additional 88 hours of Q&A sessions. It breaks down, explains, and sheds light on the manual, chapter by chapter. The result is a synergistic benefit: the course makes the manual clearer, and the manual in turn serves as a lifelong reference for those working as permaculture consultants, teachers, and practitioners.
More than enough to keep me occupied for the rest of my life
I am overwhelmed — yet thrilled — with all the links the TAs and all the other students are providing. All this in addition to Geoff's teaching. Rich beyond compare, and more than enough to keep me occupied for the rest of my life! Thank you.
Terry
l am surrounded by this amazing permaculture community
It feels like I've been led into a new environment while being blindfolded. And when the blindfold is finally removed, I am surrounded by this amazing permaculture community! I am so thrilled to be here, Thanks to Bill and Geoff and all.

Most practical process I have been through in my long life
This course has been the most inspiring, most educational and most practical process I have been through in my long life. I have so much more to learn. What a gift!

Think Like a Permaculturist:
The Final Design Exercise (FDE)
The Final Design Exercise (FDE) is a staple of PDC courses throughout the world, serving as a capstone project that unites everything learned during the course. However, after teaching for 40+ years, Geoff noticed that the standard approach to the FDE left a number of students confused, frustrated, and even intimidated. The form of the FDE was clashing with its substance.
The FDE Flow is our answer to this: a breakthrough approach that takes students by the hand and teaches how to think like a permaculturist, while detailing a step-by-step framework to capture and give expression to this thinking. Remarkably simple yet flexible, recent graduates have raved that the FDE Flow will be part of their permaculture toolkit for years to come.

THE DIGITAL PERMACULTURE DESIGN CERTIFICATE
We are honored to be the first permaculture institute anywhere in the world to issue digital certificates that are cryptographically secured via blockchain, making them instantly verifiable by prospective employers, universities, and other academic institutes. One-click sharing (LinkedIn, Facebook + dozens more) is built in, as is "anytime access" to a hard-copy version. An extensive list of skills learned and a “digital portfolio” that enables you to add photos, design sketches, and documents to your PDC hub page advance things a quantum leap forward from a paper-only certificate.

The best summary of the principles of design I've ever heard
This might just be the best summary of the principles of design l've ever heard. Very succinct and holistic. This alone is enough to justify the cost of taking this amazing course.

Staying fresh and ahead of the curve is no small task
You're rockin' it! This is advanced beyond your last course - teaching the designers (even creating "design engineers") of the future - staying fresh and ahead of the curve is no small task - this is great!
